She Writes, She Speaks,

She Rocks!

Designed to help develop girls’ critical thinking oral and written communication skills as they learn to interpret and analyze the media messages.

Mission: She Writes, She Speaks, She Rocks! is an enrichment program for middle and high school girls designed to develop writing, speaking and critical thinking skills through media literacy.

Description:

Media shape how we see ourselves, others, society, and the world. Media Literacy will provide participants with the tools to access, analyze, evaluate and produce multiple types of mediated communication as they consider the five key questions of media literacy: 1. Who created the message? (Authorship) 2. What creative techniques are used to construct the message? (Format) 3. How might different people understand this message differently from me? (Audience) 4. What values, lifestyles and points of view are represented or omitted from this message? (Content) 5. Why is this message being sent? (Purpose)

This program will help to develop students’ critical thinking and oral/written communication skills as they learn to interpret and analyze the media messages.
While a comprehensive examination of media literacy includes how media influence race, class, religion, and ability, SHE ROCKS! will specifically look at issues related to gender—how girls/women are portrayed in media; how media shape how we view ourselves and other girls/women, and ultimately how we interact with each other.

Program Outcomes:

Through session discussions, in-session exercises and monthly assignments, by the end of the program, the participants will be able to:

  • Explain how gender roles, images of women and stereotypes are created, cultivated and perpetuated in the media
  • Develop writing skills
  • Develop oral communication skills
  • Develop critical thinking skills
